Okkerlund

Architects, since 2009

Built to last a hundred winters.

Okkerlund is a studio of twelve. We design housing, schools and buildings in timber, and we give old warehouses a second working life.

Selected work

Six buildings from the last six years. Most are homes and schools for the municipality. Two are warehouses we were asked to keep.

A lime warehouse from 1912 stood empty on the quay for twenty years. We kept the brick shell, the roof trusses and the loading doors, and built 54 homes inside it in timber.

The first brief was a study for demolition. We counted the bricks instead: about 410,000, most of them sound. Keeping the shell saved an estimated 2,100 tonnes of carbon against a new building of the same size.

Inside, five floors of cross-laminated timber stand free of the old walls, so the brick can breathe and the two structures can move on their own. The gap between them became the stairs, the light wells and a winter garden for each block.

The mortar was mixed with lime from the same coast the warehouse once shipped it from.

Twelve of us in one long room above a joinery. We hear the saws from the drawing tables, which keeps us honest about how things are made.

Approach

01

Start with what is there.

Before we draw anything new we measure what stands on the site. The greenest building is usually the one already built.

02

Timber where it earns its place.

We build in wood when it is the right material for the span, the fire strategy and the budget, and we say so when it is not.

03

Draw slowly, build once.

Most of our time goes into the first year of a project. Fewer changes on site means fewer surprises for the people who pay for them.

Who we work for

  • Six municipalities
  • Four housing associations
  • Two school boards
  • and one rowing club
